Cookworthy
Forest is in NW Devon between Okehampton and
Holsworthy. As such it is easily reached from the
rest of the UK by the M5 and dual carriageway A30 to
Okehampton, and then by about 10 miles of reasonable
A class road. For example from the centre of
Birmingham to Cookworthy is only 200 miles, centre of
London to Cookworthy 210 miles and from Manchester
280 miles.
This area
was used for the first time in May 2006 for the Tamar
Triple. It has not been used since. The forest
suffered some storm damage over the winter months,
and the Forestry Commission have been working hard to
clear the debris. Erik Peckett has updated the map
produced in 2006 by Simon Beck. The area is gently
undulating Culm measures (carboniferous strata).
Typical Forestry Commission plantation of varying
ages with some patches of natural deciduous woodland.
In our opinion this is very attractive orienteering
terrain requiring skill and speed, although it is not
as detailed as Penhale or Braunton Burrows.
The two
days have been planned to be attractive to all
orienteers, and will follow the well established
format for the Caddihoe.
We are
conscious that in previous years participants have
experienced delays in the Saturday traffic on the M5
around Bristol. What we do not want is you rushing to
get to Cookworthy for a particular start time
we are therefore considering block start times. Watch
this space for more details!
Day One
is a Classic Regional Event with points counting
towards the ranking tables.
Day Two
is a non-ranking Regional Event type chasing start
with the same classes as Day 1. Your start time on
Day 2 will depend on your time from Day 1, with the
fastest runners from Day 1 starting first.
